State level chess championship begins in Fatehgarh Sahib

A three day Punjab ‘A’ Chess championship began at Mata Gujri College, Fatehgarh Sahib.
According to information received, top fourteen chess players of Punjab are participating in this championship. First four players will represent Punjab at National level Chess tournament to be held at Bhiwani (Haryana) from September 15 to September 28, 2010.

Prof Bikramjit Singh Sandhu, president of the Fatehgarh Sahib District Chess Association informed that ten international FIDE rated players are participating in this event. Top selected players from Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Sahib, Ferozepur, Moga and Sangrur districts are participating in the competition.


Dr Jatinder Singh Sidhu, principal of Mata Gujri College inaugurated the championship. Prof Parminder Kaur Randhawa, Prof Sukhdev Singh, Prof Anupreet Singh Tiwana, Prof Mukesh Kumar, Prof Navdeep Singh was also present on the occasion. Top ranked players won their matches despite spirited fight from their opponents. Top seeded Ramparkash playing with white pieces won against Tarun Rattan. After the first round, points position are as follows: Pardeep Arora [1] ,Ramparkash [1] ,Vikas Sharma [1], Chetan Bansal [1], Balwinder Singh[1], Arvinderpreet Singh,1], Himanshu Bhasin [0], Jagpreet Singh [5], Varun [5], Tarun Rattan [0], Ashuwinder Sharma [0] Tejinder Soodan[0], Manpal Singh [0] and Amit Sharma [0]
